NPA's national award that honors the contributions of industry leaders who have improved the parking industry and/or association.
Presented by the NPA Board of Directors. The Harwood Leadership Award honors the lifelong contributions of parking industry leaders to better the parking industry and the association. The award was established at the NPA Winter Leadership Forum in 2013.
This award is presented by the NPA Board of Directors to an NPA member who represents mentorship, integrity and lifelong industry contribution and leadership. The NPA Nominating Committee of the NPA Board of Directors proposes a candidate(s) for consideration by the Board. The Board votes in December on any award nominee(s). The award may be presented once per year at the annual Winter Leadership Forum.
An NPA member in good standing who through his/her leadership has helped better the industry and/or NPA. The candidate may be from any sector within the parking industry.
Named in honor of parking industry ambassador, mentor and a past board chair, Brett Harwood. Harwood was the first recipient of the award for his lifelong contributions to the parking industry and NPA. Harwood is a well-known ambassador of the parking industry who has and continues to mentor parking professionals. He is a founder and partner of Parking Advisory Group, LLC and Welcome Parking, LLC, which provide exceptional parking strategies nationally and management in the New York Metropolitan Area.
He is a former board chair of the National Parking Association, Washington, D.C. In 2011, he led the formation of the Harwood Leadership Forum & Harwood Legal Forum, brining high-level executive management presentations to both the NPA Convention & Expo and Winter Leadership Forum.
Harwood is a significant investor in parking facilities in the U.S. through Harwood Properties and other entities. Prior to its sale to Central Parking, Brett was president and director of Square Industries, Inc., where he directed 1,200 employees and revenue in excess of $100 million.
A former chairman of the Board of Trustees of Liberty Health System, Harwood led Jersey City Medical Center—which provides safety net hospital services and trauma care for the region—through a fiscal revamp that started in 2006. He also served as chairman of a capital campaign to develop the Wilzig Hospital, a 330-bed facility at Jersey City Medical Center.
Harwood earned his J.D. from Temple University and clerked for the Honorable Marshall Selikoff, Superior Court of New Jersey. He formerly practiced bankruptcy law.
