Reducing Congestion

The National Parking Association commissioned PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to conduct global research to identify trends, causes, economic impact, and potential solutions for urban congestion. This first of its kind study investigates the intersection of parking and transportation to form a holistic picture of the urban transportation ecosystem.

Smart Solutions for Shared Mobility: In this flagship illustration series, NPA envisions parking garages as multimodal Mobility Hubs supporting the movement of people and goods in the first/last mile.

Parking can be an effective tool to declutter roads and reduce curb congestion.

Although its congestion-fighting potential hasn’t always been recognized, parking is important to the smooth functioning of a city’s transportation ecosystem.

The introduction of mobility hubs, curb management, adaptive design and advanced automation all provide options for improving the use of existing infrastructure and its capacity.

The concept of parking as a mobility hub, where commuters park once and use multiple forms of transportation within the city, could be an efficient approach to effectively move people in and around cities.

PwC rendering of a Transportation Ecosystem that supports accessible, livable cities of the future.
